GEMS

October 30, 2009 kailua Kona, HI -With a commitment to community service, Jack's DivingLocker once again presented at an all day seminar called GEMS – Girls Exploring Math and Science. GEMS is an island wide event sponsored by the American Association of University Women. Close to 300 fifth grade girls from the Big Island of Hawaii converged at the Keauhou Beach Hotel in Kona to participate in this annual event. The goal of the event is to excite and engage girls in math and science before they enter middle school when their interest in these subjects often times begins to fade. By interacting with women with careers in the fields of math and science, these girls may be inspired to pursue education and employment in fields that they enjoy that are currently male dominated.

Jack’s Diving Locker has presented at the event for several years. “I felt really good about our seminar this year,” states Wendy Laros, Director of Junior Programs at Jack’s Diving Locker. “The girls really understood our material and what we were trying to convey. I believe that knowledge leads to empowerment.” The title of the Jack's Diving Locker presentation was Underwater Adventure and the women from Jack’s presented information about scuba diving, the scientific principle of buoyancy, and an introduction to Hawaiian marine life. The girls got a chance to do a buoyancy experiment and try on scuba units, wetsuits, mask, snorkel, and fins as well as learn about dolphins, sharks, and other marine creatures. |

Jack’s Diving Locker Scuba Instructor, Chrissy Dupuis, age 24, thoroughly enjoyed her experience with the girls of GEMS. She states, “The girls were really interested in our jobs and what we do. It felt good to be a role model.”
Jack’s Diving Locker participates in several community service events throughout the year such as Career Day at various local schools, Project Grad Night at Kealakehe High School, and beach and underwater clean ups along the Kona Coast. Jack’s Diving Locker is a family owned and operated scuba and snorkeling business located in the Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
